Nelson Marina Overview
At the top of the South Island in Tasman Bay lay the sheltered waters of Nelson Haven; home to the Port of Nelson - the maritime gateway to the Nelson / Marlborough Region. It is also the location of the Nelson Marina, within walking distance of the city of Nelson. The Marina is adjacent to, and shares a community relationship with, a number of local water-related organisations and user groups, including:
● Tasman Bay Cruising Club
● Nelson Yacht Club
● TS Talisman Navy Sea Cadets
● Iron Duke Sea Scouts
● Nelson Rowing Club
● Nelson Canoe Club
● Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club
● Whakatu Marae Waka-Ama Club
● Dawn-Breakers Fishing Club
● Friends of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay
● Port Nelson Ltd
The current Marina has grown in this vicinity at the mouth of the Maitai River, from the Dixon Basin created in the area of reclaimed land completed in the early 1960s when the Maitai River flowed out what is now called the Dixon Channel where the Marina extension is located.
The 14ha reclamation extension which diverted the Maitai River further east to allow the creation of the Akersten Street area was completed in the mid-1980s. These works allowed for the expansion of the marina, a three-lane boat ramp, and a combined club facility for the Iron Duke Sea Scouts, Talisman Sea Cadets, and the Nelson Rowing Club. This facility was opened in 1987, with the intention of encouraging locals to spend more leisure time on the water. The reclamation was intended for recreational purposes although it now has considerable area provided for marine industrial and commercial activities. The area surrounding the Marina is focused on providing marine services such as boat maintenance and sales.
The Marina is owned by the Nelson City Council and managed by an in-house Marina Management team. Berthage is on a rented basis, and berths are not available for purchase.
